Joey Leszczynski ’23 didn’t begin his college career as a health sciences major, but after taking a course with Professor Kirsten Hokeness, he knew he’d found his future calling. 91AV’s many classes and student engagement opportunities gave him the chance to explore his passions and embrace his identity. 

Why did you choose 91AV? 

I believed that Bryantwould provide me with enough resources and the foundation to make an impact in the world and in the workforce. I also wasn’t 100% sure what I wanted to study, and Bryanthad so many courses and concentrations to get me on the right path. At 91AV, you are welcome to explore a bunch of career options.  

How did you choose your health sciences major? 

When I started, I intended to study entrepreneurship with a minor in biology. It wasn’t until I took Immunity and Disease with Professor Kirsten Hokeness that I was able to solidify my passion. That class was my lightbulb moment. I fell in love with the material and the topics that were covered. It was at that moment I realized my true potential in the sciences. Now, I’m pursuing a master’s in public health at Brown University for infectious disease and epidemiology.

How would you describe the culture at 91AV? 

Bryanthelps students thrive and develop their passions. I really found that Bryantfit well with my multifaceted identity. Being somebody who is interested in immunology and epidemiology, but also fashion and communication, I found that Bryantallows you to do so much and not burn yourself out. You can create an impact and really see the fruits of your labor. 

How did you make Bryantyour own? 

There are a bunch of organizations that go beyond the classroom. I’m the founder and editor-in-chief of , which is a student-led magazine meant to amplify student voices and student expression. I wanted Thrive to be a small confidence boost that helps students to recognize and celebrate themselves. I’m also involved in orientation programs, , the, and the . 

What’s your favorite place on campus?

My favorite place on campus is the Academic Innovation Center. I always book a room to study and collaborate with friends. I find that I’m a creative and visual learner, so being able to write on the walls is really important because I get to see the material I’m learning and understand it a lot better. 

What advice would you give to future Bulldogs? 

Don’t be afraid to make an impact. Really find and harness things that you’re passionate about, and focus on that talent of yours and find a place at Bryantto thrive. If there’s a change you want to establish, be the change you want to see on campus.
